Elizabeth Wessel breathes Fashion.

As a little girl, she played Fashion, dreamt Fashion, thought Fashion. Her mother taught her taste for refinement and elegance.

She accompanied her mother to her favorite Couturiers fashion shows in Paris and thus, one thing leading to another, as soon as her age permitted, she followed a solid formation in Haute Couture and threw herself into this fascinating career.

Elizabeth Wessel’s line is clean and pure. With her irreproachable cut, she interprets the modern and elegant woman with a twist of “a certain something”. Her models are statements where nothing can be added, nor taken away. They have charisma. She mixes structure and softness with dexterity, creating a subtle feminine / masculine equilibrium. She estimates that the one is nothing without the other and that it is necessary to include a zest of the opposite to achieve a result with character. This is the primary rule of her fashion philosophy. It counts for shapes as well as colour combinations.

Her models may be worn at all times of the day. In a glimpse with a bare change of accessories, the woman of the morning becomes the woman of the evening.
Fashion goes out of fashion but Style remains. Elizabeth Wessel has her own particular style and her models remain in actuality forever.

Elizabeth Wessel’s artistic sensitivity and expression is seen through the prism of Fashion.

In her mind, painting and design interact continually and she interprets her surrounding world with a graphic and uncluttered style. Her vision goes straight to the essential message avoiding any distraction. She paints her slender and vigorous characters with a forceful and concise stroke inspired from her stylized Haute Couture sketches.

The composition of her paintings recalls the settings of fashion photography. Based on the visual effects of lines, she creates a sense of drama evoking the spectacular esthetics of Art Deco.

She plays with tempera, she plays with oils. She likes to   manipulate, twist, gather, drape and sew superb fabrics on her canvasses, thus creating the effect of another dimension.

Elizabeth Wessel illustrates visuals for posters and invitations. She emphasizes her taste for clean and precise lines expressed in many images, drawings and sketches with a disconcerting strength.

Her cartoons are treated in a similar way, following the same aesthetic criterion. She tells about her travelling experiences and her personal awkward and ridiculous situations. They are all her own unglamorous adventures. Better to laugh than cry !

With a diploma from the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne, Elizabeth Wessel began her career as a fashion designer with the Haute Couture House Torrente in Paris.
In 1972, she launched the Elizabeth Wessel brand name and opened her own shop in Paris, at the same time designing and making pullovers for Jean Patou, Philippe Venet and Givenchy. She won the Press Gala 1st Prize in Paris for her Autumn/Winter collection in 1974.
She then opened her boutique in Bogotà in Colombia in 1975, creating costumes for musical revues made by Colombian television. She created costumes and illustrations for posters for the American theatre troupe Dance Theater in Paris in 1979. From 1980, Elizabeth Wessel moved to Monaco and opened her fashion bureau there. Her creations are sold in multi-brand boutiques and department stores throughout the world.
Her collection was made and sold under licence in Japan from 1989 to 2001.
From 2002, she returned to Haute Couture, favouring an “atelier” approach to creating exclusive models for an international clientele. Elizabeth Wessel Haute Couture gives Fashion Shows in Monaco twice a year.
The Public were also able to discover the artist in her through her paintings, posters and her most expressive drawings, recognizable by her very original style, and which has been exhibited in Japan and Europe and are widely collected. She makes sketches and cartoon strips with an ever-sharp eye for life around her. She divides her time today between painting and Haute Couture, drawing inspiration from her fluid and uncluttered sense of style.

Haute-couture

Elizabeth Wessel creates bespoke haute-couture for all events and circumstances of life. Her style is graphic, light and feminine. Elizabeth privileges the conception of cut as opposed to the easy effects of added details.  Her creations are pure and they remain as timeless statements. The materials used are noble. Silks, cashmeres and linnens are the principal actors of the show.

Portraits

Elizabeth Wessel paints fashion portraits of women, men and children. The style is pure and uncluttered. The faces are particularely expressive and the look is strong. The techniques used are acrylic or tempera. Certain paintings are sown with precious silks or a multitude of fabrics for 3D effects.
